Medicare & GLP-1 weight-loss medications

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is launching a new temporary program called the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program, which significantly expands access to GLP-1 weight-loss medications for eligible Medicare patients. The demonstration runs from July 1, 2026 through December 31, 2027.

Major new Medicare GLP-1 benefits — $50 monthly copay

Eligible Medicare beneficiaries may be able to receive covered GLP-1 medications for a flat $50 per month. This is a major reduction compared with current retail prices that can exceed $1,000 per month.

Covered medications

Current medications expected to be included (subject to CMS updates):

  • Wegovy® (injection and tablets)
  • Zepbound® (KwikPen® only)
  • Foundayo®

Some versions of oral GLP-1 medications may also be covered. Zepbound single-dose vial and pen formulations are not included in the Bridge—only the KwikPen per CMS guidance.

Who may qualify?

Patients generally must:

  • Have Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage with prescription drug coverage
  • Meet obesity or metabolic criteria set by CMS for the program
  • Have qualifying BMI ranges and/or related health conditions
  • Receive medical supervision and prior authorization from your provider

Examples of qualifying conditions may include:

  • Obesity
  • Prediabetes
  • Heart disease
  • History of stroke

Program rules and covered products are set by CMS and may change. Final eligibility and cost depend on your plan, clinical criteria, and prior authorization approval. This information is educational—not a guarantee of coverage.

Questions & answers

Do you accept Medicare?

Yes. Health Management Care, PC accepts Medicare and Railroad Medicare. We also accept many other plans—see our insurance page or call the office if you have questions about your specific coverage.

What is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

The AWV is a preventive visit for Medicare beneficiaries. It focuses on your health risks, functional status, and prevention plan. It is not the same as a problem-focused sick visit or a full head-to-toe physical, though we can address separate concerns at other appointments.

How do I schedule my Annual Wellness Visit?

Call our office at (810) 662-3220 and ask to schedule a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit. Established patients may also use online scheduling for many visit types; AWV and physicals often need a phone call so we reserve the right amount of time.

Are you accepting new Medicare patients?

Yes, we welcome new patients including those with Medicare. New patients can request an appointment through our new patient form or by calling the office.

What should I bring to my Medicare visit?

Bring your Medicare card, a list of medications (or your bottles), names of other doctors you see, and any recent hospital or specialist records you want us to review. A family member or caregiver is welcome if that helps you.

What is the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program?

Starting July 1, 2026, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is launching the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program—a temporary demonstration through December 31, 2027—that expands access to certain GLP-1 weight-loss medications for eligible Medicare Part D beneficiaries at a $50 monthly copay. Eligibility, covered products, and prior authorization requirements are set by CMS. We can help determine whether you may qualify and coordinate medical supervision.

Which GLP-1 medications may be covered under the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

CMS has indicated that eligible products may include Wegovy (injection and tablets), Zepbound (KwikPen formulation only), and Foundayo, when prescribed for weight reduction and maintenance. Some oral GLP-1 formulations may be included. Coverage depends on meeting program criteria and prior authorization—not every patient or prescription will qualify.
